Service Learning Projects
Our students are commmitted to making a difference in the community. Therefore, each classroom has created a philanthropic mission, which affords them the opportunity to donate funds and/or materials to a noble cause. Listed below is an outline highlighting the effort and impact of each classroom.
KINDERGARTEN - Wig Out is a non-profit organization that raises money for individuals going through chemo-therapy. These patients receive financial assistance towards purchasing a wig. Our kindergarten classes have held bake sales to help aid this worthy cause.FIRST GRADE - Each year our First Grade students help the Arizona Humane Society by collecting blankets and food; that are then donated for cats and dogs that are going through hard times. Our young students love knowing that they are helping some deserving animal friends.
SECOND GRADE – Although they would love to raise a wild animal, second grade has instead chosen to raise money to “adopt” an animal at the Phoenix Zoo. By holding various bake sales at school, they are able to sponsor an interesting animal and help fund their exhibit.
Mrs. Hansen, Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Quinn, and Mrs. Swane- Inspired by the book, Three Cups of Tea , these four classes have worked hard to raise money that will ultimately support agriculture, education, and self sufficiency in the country of Nepal. In the past, their bake sale money has gone towards trees, farm animals, and solar panels.
Mrs. Detterbeck- Her fourth and fifth grade students have chosen The North Star Bridge as the recipient of their mission. This organization offers financial assistance to individuals who aspire to continue their higher education but are strapped financially. Mrs. Detterbeck’s students recognize the importance of education and work hard to support this worthy cause.
Mrs. Spoonhunter’s class works towards donating new stuffed animals to Phoenix Children’s Hospital. They are also involved with the Victory Junction Gang; an organization that is affiliated with NASCAR. Victory Junction Gang raises money for children with chronic diseases that might not otherwise have the funds to attend summer camp.
Mrs. Marshall- Sun Sounds of Arizona provides audio materials for those who cannot read print because of a disability. Mrs. Marshall’s class is proud to help provide information for those who might not otherwise receive it due to a disability.
Mrs. Hogan, Mrs. Bawolek, and Mr. Pasinski - Our seventh and eighth grade students are a part of Tempe’s Adopt a Mile Program. Our students eagerly pick up trash and debris along Elliot Road. Their effort helps keep the city of Tempe a clean place to live and work.
Schoolwide Projects- UNICEF and United Canned Food Drive
UNICEF is a world-wide organization that works to improve the lives of children. Every October CEE students participate in Trick or Treat for UNICEF and collect coins for this organization. Money raised goes towards fighting poverty, providing clean drinking water, and education in underdeveloped nations.
We are also proud to host a canned food drive for this local organization. This is one small way that we can encourage our students to develop compassion for others in our community.
